The coming year is likely to be a difficult one for many businesses, with any recovery from current economic troubles likely to be slow and fragile. Businesses and individuals will also face an inevitable increase in taxes, as the government – of whichever party – attempts to rein in the national debt.

One of the most noticeable tax changes on the horizon is the introduction of a new 50% tax rate from 6 April. While HMRC is likely to take a hard line on tax avoidance, there are many legitimate techniques which can be employed, including taking as much income as possible in the 2008/9 tax year, or considering the transfer of income-producing assets to a spouse or partner.

On the payroll front, employers are facing the introduction of new rules requiring all workers to be enrolled into a workplace pension scheme, such as the new government-backed National Employment Savings Trust (NEST). The new rules are currently due to be phased in between 2012 and 2016, but companies would be well-advised to begin planning now, to avoid any last-minute panic.
